{"id":1829,"date":"2019-10-01T06:04:20","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T06:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.miick.com\/?p=1829"},"modified":"2021-08-20T18:48:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-20T18:48:00","slug":"3-labor-issues-3-labor-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miick.com\/3-labor-issues-3-labor-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Labor Issues, 3 Labor Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Regardless the business or industry, the topic of labor keeps bobbing its head screaming:&nbsp;Core Issue, Core Issue!&nbsp;Core Issue!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three issues, three solutions:<br>Issue I. Finding&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;<em>keeping<\/em>&nbsp;great staff is illusive.&nbsp;This is the same old story.&nbsp;Here are three solutions to this issue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Define excellence in every job or position<\/strong>.&nbsp;Instead of relying on common sense (there\u2019s no common sense by the way) create a shared sense of what performance excellence is.&nbsp;Period.&nbsp;See item II Below!<\/li><li><strong>Tell a story in your job posts.<\/strong>&nbsp;Re-think help wanted and talk about the kind of work place you have and the opportunities there are for anyone working here.&nbsp;<em>Hire<\/em>&nbsp;attitude, teach skills.&nbsp;See item II Below!&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Hold interviews on a regular basis.<\/strong>&nbsp;Instead of hiring a warm pulse, interview until you find the right attitude.&nbsp;Hire A+ when it shows up.&nbsp;The ratio we\u2019ve found typical is about twenty (20) interviews for one (1) A+ hire.&nbsp;(All the better when we define what A+ actually is.)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Issue II. Be aware of three (3) cultural norms!\u00a0Two are deadly.\u00a0After forty years building, evolving and growing values driven, high performing companies, I find the following Irrefutable:\u00a0Workers work in three broad culture norms.\u00a0Each is created by <a href=\"https:\/\/miick.com\/solutions\/leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leadership behaviors<\/a> which by choice or default create a Brand\/Culture norm.\u00a0Motivators are one of three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>fear<\/strong>&nbsp;= do the job or else.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>With fear, A+ players leave because they know they can get a job anywhere.&nbsp;A company driven by fear gets left with average or below average performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>neutral<\/strong>&nbsp;= it\u2019s a job;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A company playing in the neutral mode, have leaders thinking it\u2019s the workers that need to change or evolve to our habits, it\u2019s not us that have to shift attitudes it\u2019s the employees that need to adhere to us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens:&nbsp;In neutral mode (the typical restaurant or hospitality side is neutral) and performance is, well, average, not great, not horrible.&nbsp;Outcome?&nbsp;The attitude of leadership we find is that labor is hard, we can\u2019t find any good people.&nbsp;We have a turn over median that is +\/- 185%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C. inspiration<\/strong>&nbsp;= I am inspired by what&nbsp;<em>we<\/em>&nbsp;do and thus,&nbsp;<em>I perform&nbsp;<\/em>at a higher level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an&nbsp;<em>inspired<\/em>&nbsp;workplace excellence is defined, A+ players are inspired, performance rises, and we just keep getting better!&nbsp;Turnover drops and retention rises in an inspired workplace because the team is, well,&nbsp;<em>inspired<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of interest too is this:&nbsp;people&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;inspired leave of their own accord.&nbsp;Ironically who replaces them are other inspired workers.&nbsp;Hence the potency of a values driven work place.&nbsp;The more we define excellence and coach to the positive, the culture\/brand acts as an attractor for new hires that&nbsp;<em>want<\/em>&nbsp;to perform!&nbsp;Turnover goes down, costs go down, retention, sales and profits go up!&nbsp;Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Issue III.&nbsp;AI is a paradox: Incredible opportunity and threat!&nbsp;Be Aware!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news and the bad news is that unemployment is at a near all-time low.&nbsp;Bad news, our story continues to be, \u201cI can\u2019t find any good people out there!\u201d&nbsp;(Where do I find great people? start over, read from the top of the blog)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good news: Just \u201caround the bend\u201d, 5 years, 10 years at most, there\u2019s a freight train headed straight at us.&nbsp;Thanks to the story about how hard it is to get good help,&nbsp;<em>and ever enhanced technology<\/em>, AI is going be a capital investment that replaces&nbsp;<em>any<\/em>&nbsp;staff position that demands consistent, replicable performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bad news:&nbsp;As low as unemployment is now, it\u2019ll be that proportionally high when AI kicks in hard.&nbsp;Seems like it can be an employer\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026 One last piece that I\u2019m not hearing anyone talk about is what happens to gross sales when so many people will be unemployed and potentially unemployable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s our role as leaders, founders, c-suite and floor for vision with training, ongoing learning of all kinds for the team members we have and will have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, the three&nbsp;<strong>issues<\/strong>&nbsp;relate.&nbsp;When issue I. and issue II are put in place, Issue III. takes care of itself for now.&nbsp;(More on this in coming blogs.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions come to mind:&nbsp;What\u2019s it take to have a truly inspired workplace?&nbsp;Do We actually care enough to inspire?&nbsp;Is it just easier to drive people?&nbsp;Is our training enough?&nbsp;How do we keep getting better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As my colleague\/friend Horst Abrams asks, \u201cYour Thoughts?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Miick<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to receiving these benefits is learning how to delegate effectively.\u00a0Miick is an able coach and guide for you and your team in the process.
